***  Effective December 6, 2021, all airline passengers to the United States ages two years and older, regardless of vaccination status or citizenship, must provide a negative COVID-19 viral test taken within one calendar day of travel. Alternatively, travelers to the United States may provide documentation from a licensed health care provider of having recovered from COVID-19 in the 90 days preceding travel.  Check the CDC website for additional information and Frequently Asked Questions.

Country-Specific Information

  • Both the Republic of Cyprus and the area administered by Turkish Cypriots (“Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus”) maintain restrictions intended to address the continued outbreak of COVID-19.
  • Restrictions vary between the two areas; details are below.

COVID-19 Testing

REPUBLIC OF CYPRUS:

  • Are PCR and/or antigen tests available for U.S. citizens in the Republic of Cyprus? YES
  • Are COVID-19 PCR tests are available at designated laboratories in the ROC (English) If so, are test results reliably available within one calendar day? YES
    • Those contacted by the Ministry of Health due to contact tracing are entitled to one free test. Physicians can also refer patients for tests at local General Hospitals. Rapid antigen tests are available at select sites announced by ROC daily.
    • PCR test results are received by SMS message, usually within 24 hours. Rapid antigen test results are received on paper immediately following the test with a confirmation SMS (in Greek).
    • For travelers to the United States: PCR tests meet the CDC requirements for travel and are accepted by airlines.

AREA ADMINISTERED BY TURKISH CYPRIOTS (“TRNC”):

  • Are PCR and/or antigen tests available for U.S. citizens in “TRNC?” YES
  • If so, are test results reliably available within one calendar day? YES
    • COVID-19 PCR tests are available at most hospitals and clinics PCR tests cost 100 Turkish Lira and Rapid Tests cost 40 Turkish Lira.
    • PCR test results are received by SMS message and online portal, usually within 24 hours.

  • Has the government of the Republic of Cyprus approved a COVID-19 vaccine for use? YES
  • Are vaccines available in the ROC for U.S. citizens to receive? YES
  • Which vaccines are available in the ROC?

AREA ADMINISTERED BY TURKISH CYPRIOTS (“TRNC”):

  • Has the “government of TRNC” approved a COVID-19 vaccine for use? YES
  • Are vaccines available in “TRNC” for U.S. citizens to receive? YES
  • Which vaccines are available in “TRNC”? AstraZeneca, Pfizer, Sinovac, Johnson.
    • Information in English regarding vaccination in “TRNC” is currently unavailable. U.S. citizen residents of “TRNC” are advised to contact the “Ministry of Health” for more information.
    • Visit the FDA’s website to learn more about FDA-approved vaccines in the United States.
    • The United States Government does not plan to provide COVID-19 vaccinations to private U.S. citizens overseas. Please follow host country developments and guidelines for COVID-19 vaccination.
    • Persons are only considered vaccinated if they have received a booster dose of the vaccine after a period of 7 months following the completion of their most recent vaccination.

Entry and Exit Requirements

REPUBLIC OF CYPRUS:

  • Are U.S. citizens permitted to enter? YES
    • Complete information and requirements to travel to the Republic of Cyprus can be found here. NOTE: In order to board a flight, all incoming travelers must provide information to the Republic of Cyprus and obtain a “Flight Pass” within 48 hours of travel at: https://www.cyprusflightpass.gov.cy. Request for humanitarian or emergency exemptions can be made via the website or via the call center for Flight Pass inquiries: +357-22-285-757.
    • Those testing positive upon arrival must quarantine for 14 days. Children under the age of 12 do not require testing. Information on country categories can be found at: https://cyprusflightpass.gov.cy/en/country-categories
  • Are health screening procedures in place at airports and points of entry? YES
    • As of January 4, 2022, all passengers, regardless of the country of departure, or vaccination status, aged 12 and over entering the Republic of Cyprus by air or by sea must present a negative PCR test result taken within the past 48 hour. In addition, upon arrival, they will be required to undergo a rapid antigen test at their own cost and self-isolate either at home or their hotel until the results are out.
    • Approved tourist travelers to ROC from the United States (over the age of 12) must complete a PCR test upon entry
    • Those testing positive are subject to quarantine at a government-designated hotel for 14 days and must complete a negative PCR test prior to release following Ministry of Health protocol. Self-isolated individuals should only leave their house for emergency after contacting a doctor or dialing 1420. If other passengers on your flight subsequently test positive on arrival to Cyprus, you may be subject to further mandatory quarantine/self-isolation measures.

AREA ADMINISTERED BY TURKISH CYPRIOTS (“TRNC”):

  • Are U.S. citizens permitted to enter? YES
    • The United States does not recognize the self-proclaimed “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus,” nor does any country other than Turkey. A UN peacekeeping force patrols a buffer zone, also called “the Green Line,” which separates the two sides. U.S. citizen travelers should enter and exit the Republic of Cyprus ONLY at Larnaca and Paphos airports and at the seaports of Limassol, Larnaca, and Paphos. The Republic of Cyprus does not consider entry at Ercan Airport in the north to be a “legal” entrance into Cyprus.
    • All flights to Ercan Airport in “TRNC” must transit Turkey. U.S. citizens transiting to/from Ercan Airport are advised to update their STEP registration to include Turkey.
    • People entering the “TRNC” by sea-air routes and those coming from outside the island who enter by using the land border gates must fill in their digital travel documents and set up their records as stated in https://saglik.gov.ct.tr/TRAVEL-RULES Creating a Digital Travel Document will be required for people aged 6 years and over.
    • As of December 27, 2021 “TRNC” has classified the United States as a “Red” country. Vaccinated travelers from the United States entering by air or sea (see below for entering visa through UN Buffer Zone) who provide proof of vaccination (14 days after their final dose) or proof of recovering from COVID in the previous six months must also present a negative PCR test result in the previous 72 hours. Unvaccinated passengers must present a negative PCR test from the previous 72 hours and quarantine for seven days at their own expense. See the country categories here.
    • The PCR test result must be on paper (not SMS), be stamped by the lab or hospital conducting the test, include a barcode, and must be in English. Fully vaccinated travelers may cross with a negative rapid or PCR test in the previous seven days. Those allowed in home quarantine are monitored by electronic device. Requirements are found here.
  • Are health screening procedures in place at airports and points of entry? YES
    • Authorities have categorized entry conditions for passengers entering “TRNC.” See the country categories here.
    • Travelers from the United States should see entry requirements above.
    • Fully vaccinated travelers (14 days after their final dose) may enter the “TRNC” with of proof of completed vaccination program and a PCR test result obtained within 72 hours of entry. Unvaccinated travelers entering the “TRNC” via the UN Buffer Zone must show a negative rapid or PCR test in the previous 72 hours. The test result must be on paper (not SMS), be stamped by the lab or hospital conducting the test, include a barcode, and must be in English.

Movement Restrictions

REPUBLIC OF CYPRUS:

  • Is a curfew in place? NO
    • A valid “SafePass” is required from all individuals aged between 18 and 65 to enter indoor and outdoor venues. More information can be obtained from EU Digital COVID Certificate. The ROC Ministry of Health has stated that a U.S. CDC card or VAMS certificate is also acceptable as a SafePass. EU passport holders and legal residents of the Republic of Cyprus may also apply for the EU Digital COVID Certificate.
    • The electronic version of SafePass is also mandatory to visit public services, banks, public transportation, and public venues.

  • Are there restrictions on intercity or interstate travel? NO

AREA ADMINISTERED BY TURKISH CYPRIOTS (“TRNC”):

  • Is a curfew in place? NO

    • Residents must register their vaccination status with the “Adapass” system. More details are found here.
    • Use of masks for all ages 6 and over is mandatory in all areas where the protective mask is required.
    • Residents of “TRNC” who either study or work in the ROC will be allowed to re-enter “TRNC” provided they show a negative PCR/rapid test result and proof of vaccination.
  • Are there restrictions on intercity or interstate travel? NO

Quarantine Information

REPUBLIC OF CYPRUS:

  • Are U.S. citizens required to quarantine? YES
    • See Entry / Exit requirements above.
    • Adherence to home quarantine / self-isolation protocols may be monitored in-person or by telephone. Those in self-isolation should only leave their house for emergency after contacting a doctor or dialing 1420. If the individual in isolation is a minor, only one adult is allowed to remain in the home and request absence from work.

AREA ADMINISTERED BY TURKISH CYPRIOTS (“TRNC”):

  • Are U.S. citizens required to quarantine? YES
    • See Entry / Exit requirements above.
    • Quarantine is at “government”-allocated facilities at the traveler’s expense. Home quarantine is granted for certain exceptions, monitored by wearing an ankle bracelet, and only by permission granted in advance.
    • Information may be obtained from the “Ministry of Health” Covid hotline at 1111.

Transportation Options

  • Are commercial flights operating? YES
    • Commercial flights are operating in the Republic of Cyprus and “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.”
  • Is public transportation operating? YES
    • Face coverings are required on all public transport.

Fines for Non-Compliance

REPUBLIC OF CYPRUS:

  • Failure to wear a face covering in any public space or on public transport is punishable by fine up to 300 euro.
  • Travelers who fail to comply with self-isolation regulations may face fines, imprisonment, or both.

AREA ADMINISTERED BY TURKISH CYPRIOTS (“TRNC”):

  • “Official” information about fines is unavailable at this time. Media reports indicate: Failure to wear a face covering or maintain social distance rules may result in a 300 Turkish lira fine. Those not following quarantine regulations may be fined 15,000 Turkish lira. Fines must be paid within 30 days or the offender risks one year in prison.

Consular Operations

  • The U.S. Embassy in Nicosia has resumed services to U.S. citizens.  Appointments for passports and CRBAs are available on our website. If you require urgent notarial services please email ACSNicosia@state.gov. If you need immediate assistance related to an emergency, such as a death, hospitalization, or you have been a victim of serious crime, you can call the Embassy at +357 22 393939.
  • Consular operations at the U.S. Embassy’s north office are suspended temporarily.
  • The United States Embassy in Nicosia, Republic of Cyprus, has limited non-immigrant visa appointments available.
