Demonstration Alert: Nicosia, Cyprus

Event:  

U.S. citizens are advised that ongoing demonstrations are expected the weekend of July 24-25.  Large crowds and a strong police presence in the vicinity of the demonstrations is expected.

 

On Saturday, July 24th at 6:00pm, a demonstration is expected in the vicinity of the the Presidential Palace. The demonstration will be one of several held simultaneously worldwide and may result in protests in other locations in Cyprus.

 

On Sunday, July 25th at 6:00pm, a demonstration is expected at the Ministry of Justice.

 

All citizens should exercise caution and be aware of their surroundings, particularly around large crowds or gatherings.  Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can become confrontational and possibly escalate into violence with little or no warning.  The U.S. Embassy will continue to monitor the situation and will send an update if new information arises.

 

Actions to Take:

  • Avoid the areas of the demonstrations.
  • Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.
  • Monitor local media for updates.
