Remarks by Assistant Secretary A. Wess Mitchell following his meeting with President Anastasiades

Assistant Secretary Mitchell statement following his meeting with President Anastasiades

I had a very warm and engaging conversation with President Anastasiades.  It was important for me, on one of my first trips in this role, to come to Cyprus.  I reiterated to the President our appreciation for the strategic partnership that we have with the Republic of Cyprus.  I also reiterated our desire to see a resumption of talks and our support for a bizonal, bicommunal federation.  I also reiterated that the United States supports the Republic of Cyprus in its right to develop natural resources including in the Exclusive Economic Zone.  I am going to have conversations while I am here with both communities.  We will be talking later today with Mr. Akinci and I am really pleased to be here.  We are very supportive of the Republic of Cyprus.  I appreciate the longstanding friendship that we have and I look forward to being back.
